Tim Sullivan, cake artist extraordinaire, won first place in the 2013 Cake Decorating with Modeling Chocolate Competition with this realistic 3D sculpted bust of Tonto from The Lone Ranger. The entire face was sculpted with white modeling chocolate. Believe it or not, this was Tim’s first life-sized face cake and first time working with white modeling chocolate.

Chocolate Optical Illusion Cake

Optical Illusion Cake made by Conjurer's Kitchen

MADE BY ANNABEL DE VETTEN of CONJURER’S KITCHEN

This 3-tier round cake decorated with a chocolate optical illusion pattern was crafted by Annabel Vetten, a brilliant food artist who crafts edible sculptures using both sweet and savory edibles. Her “dark” portfolio of morbid realism includes some of the most shocking cakes I have ever seen. Check out her portfolio at Conjurer’s Kitchen.

Blue Optical Illusion Cake

Optical Illusion Cake made by Pauline of Bite Me Bakery

MADE BY PAULINE OF BITE ME BAKERY

I love his two-tiered version of the optical illusion cake, decorated with tangles and whorls of blue and white piped chocolate.

Peter Rabbit Cake

Peter Rabbit Cake made by Donna Gregory of Sweetery Bake Shop

MADE BY DONNA GREGORY of SWEETERY BAKE SHOP

What’s so impressive to me about this cake is how Donna created an edible scene to match with a set of ceramic figurines. So seamlessly did she integrate the ceramics into the design that it all looks as if it came from the same source. Among the tiny edible garnishes decorating the two tiers of this cake, there are carrots, flowers, leaves, vines, grass, a weathered wooden gate, arched door and signpost with an inlaid Happy Birthday inscription.

Buttercream Beach Cake

Buttercream Beach Cake made by Yariana Wortz of Curly Girl Bakes

MADE BY YARIANA WORTZ OF CURLY GIRL BAKES

I would love to take a vacation on this beach-themed birthday cake with edible sand, seashells, palm trees, blanket, umbrella, beach ball and blue buttercream waves. This was my favorite of Yariana’s winning submissions in the A-Z Baking Challenge.

Modeling Chocolate Pirate & Pool Cakes

Modeling Chocolate Cakes made by Brenda Broadway

MADE BY BRENDA BROADWAY, TEXAS GLAMMA OF BB BAKES SUGAR ART

I am a fan of Brenda Broadway’s whimsical style of cake decorating. Here are two examples of her work with modeling chocolate. On the left is a pirate themed design with edible seashells, ocean waves, treasure map, pirate ship, anchor, nautical steering wheel, and coils of rope. On the right is a pool party themed cake with edible inner-tubes, flotation devices, and a trio of figurines wearing bathing suits.

Wine Bottle Crate Cake#1

Wine Bottle Cake made by Rita Vascimi

MADE BY RITA VASCIMINI

Vodka was the trick to achieving the glass shimmer on this 3D wine bottle cake wrapped in modeling chocolate. Rita, the artist, painted the light green modeling chocolate finish with a mixture of dark green food coloring + vodka. You would never guess this was her first attempt using the filling layer cakes in the pan method, so professional is the quality of the work! What I admire about Rita’s creative process is the research & planning she does before approaching new and advanced techniques. She has a knack for problem-solving and never shies away from a complicated project.

Wine Bottle Crate Cake #2

Wine Bottle Crate Cake made by Sarah Harris

MADE BY SARAH HARRIS

This chocolate fudge cake frosted with chocolate ganache was formed in the shape of a wooden crate with packing material and a wine bottle. The decorations were made with a combination of modelling chocolate and fondant. The picture frame is embossed modelling chocolate. The edible label includes the name and year of birth of the birthday girl.

Takout Chinese Food Cake

Takeout Chinese Food Cake by Heather Barnett

Heather sculpted this 3D cake to look like a Chinese food takeout container brimming with noodles, chopsticks and fortune cookies. It’s clever how she incorporated a Happy Birthday inscription into one of the fortunes.

Football Referee Jersey Cake

Football Referee Cake made by Dana Dell'Omo

MADE BY DANA DELL’OMO of DANA KAY’S DELECTABLES

Among Dana’s many talents is a knack for figuring out how to transpose complicated party themes onto traditional dessert shapes. In this example, she transformed a basic sheet cake into a 3D sculpted referee torso complete with black & white striped collared uniform, a pocket, an Arizona patch, a yellow foul flag, and a dangling whistle. This cake was served alongside football themed cupcakes to complete the display.

Standing Chewbacca Cake

3D Chewbacca Cake made by Holly Fredrickson

MADE BY HOLLY FREDRICKSON

Fur is one of the more challenging textures to render in edible form, especially when it covers the majority of surface area on the cake. Holly discovered a solution that involves wrapping the body in strips of dark modeling chocolate cut with scissors to make frills. The result is a thick pelt that on the one hand is quite hairy-looking but on the other hand, still manages to appear chocolaty and edible.

Modeling Chocolate Flower Cakes

Modeling Chocolate Flower Cakes made by Holly Fredrickson

It blows my mind that the flowers on these cakes are edible, so thin and delicate are the petals. Holly, the artist, crafted them from modeling chocolate.

Lamb, Dragon, and Panda Bear Figurines

Modeling Chocolate Cake Decorations made by Jennifer Hoey

MADE BY JENNIFER HOEY

It’s worth zooming in to appreciate the details on this cake decorated with 3D modeling chocolate figurines including a fiery dragon, seated panda and woolly lamb. Holly has a talent for sculpting tiny edible characters complete with facial expressions, mood and personality.

Modeling Chocolate Flowers Cake

Modeling Chocolate Flower Cake made by Noreen Abel

MADE BY NOREEN ABEL

My favorite detail about this cake is how the winding buttercream border cleverly doubles as a curly vine. Noreen blended green tones and spatula swirls into the frosting finish of a garden-themed cake decorated with bright blooms of modeling chocolate flowers. On first impression, it appears as if every stroke was casually, effortlessly made and yet upon closer examination, it’s evident that the entire composition is perfectly balanced, singing with harmony. That is the mark of a true craftswoman.

Naked Cakes made by Gwynne Bobich of Sugar Lake Lodge

MADE BY GWYNNE BOBICH OF SUGAR LAKE LODGE

Gwynne wrote: I’d like to thank you for your wonderful, informative web site. I made 3 naked cakes for our daughter’s wedding this past New Year’s Eve and used your pan filling/freezing procedure and it worked amazingly well.  I was so happy with the result. I made them all the week before the wedding; 1 – 6 layer Almond Scented cake, 1 – 4 layer Chocolate Espresso Cake, 1 – 2 layer Pecan Coconut. I also made 3 full sized sheet cakes, one of each flavor, using the pan filling/freezing procedure. The cakes were all moist and delicious!
