Essential Cake Frosting Tools

Small Offset Spatula

Small Offset Spatula

The small offset spatula is a useful tool for applying crumb coats on smaller cakes, sculpted cakes, or highly contoured cakes. It’s also handy for leveling off dry ingredients in measuring spoons, for lifting small cakes, and for maneuvering cake decorations.

Medium Offset Spatula

The medium offset spatula is the best general frosting tool. It is especially compatible for frosting medium and large sized standard-shaped cakes (cylinder, square, rectangle tiers). It also works well for lifting and transferring larger sized tiers.

Bench Scraper

Bench Scraper

The bench scraper is an excellent tool for frosting the sides of cakes – especially square cakes. It can also be used for cutting through cake during the sculpting process. Simply push the blade into the top of a cold cake to cut pieces away.

Some bench scrapers have a slight curve to the blade. For frosting cakes, you want the kind of bench scraper that has a straight blade. It’s better to shop for this type of implement in person. If that is not an option, look for the kind of bench scraper with a wooden handle as those are less likely to have a curve to the metal. Another option is the bench scraper with a handle that does not jut out so you can get even closer to the working platform.
